  • 6-Minute Walk Distance (6MWD) Percent Predicted: Explanation and Clinical Context
The 6MWD is a standardized test measuring the distance a patient can walk in six minutes, reflecting functional exercise capacity. Percent predicted 6MWD is calculated using demographic factors (age, sex, height, weight) to estimate expected performance based on population norms. The formula used here is derived from Enright et al., 1998, which provides reference equations for healthy adults.
Values >80% of predicted are generally considered within normal functional capacity, whereas lower percentages indicate reduced exercise tolerance and may correlate with cardiovascular, pulmonary, or muscular limitations.
Percent predicted 6MWD is used in clinical settings for risk stratification, monitoring disease progression, and evaluating response to rehabilitation or therapy.
