- CONUT Score (Controlling Nutritional Status): Explanation and Clinical Context
CONUT Score is a validated nutritional screening tool that estimates malnutrition in hospitalized patients using three laboratory parameters: serum albumin, total lymphocyte count, and total cholesterol.
Albumin reflects protein reserves, lymphocyte count reflects immune function, and cholesterol reflects caloric depletion.
The total CONUT score classifies patients into normal nutrition, mild, moderate, or severe malnutrition. Higher scores correlate with poorer clinical outcomes, including increased morbidity and mortality, particularly in cardiovascular disease and heart failure populations.
This tool allows clinicians to identify patients at nutritional risk and implement timely nutritional interventions, potentially improving prognosis and quality of care.
