  • Low Cardiac Output Syndrome (LCOS) Score: Explanation and Clinical Context
Low Cardiac Output Syndrome (LCOS) is a major postoperative complication after adult cardiac surgery, associated with increased morbidity and mortality.
This scoring system was developed by Kang et al. (2017) to predict the probability of LCOS based on preoperative and intraoperative variables, including age, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time, number of valves replaced, and preoperative intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support.
The logistic regression model outputs a probability (0–100%) representing the risk of developing LCOS.
Clinically, this score can help cardiac surgeons and intensivists to identify high-risk patients early, optimize perioperative management, plan for inotropic support, and allocate resources effectively.
