- PROVE-HF Surgical Score: Explanation and Clinical Context
The PROVE-HF Surgical Score is a prognostic tool designed to predict postoperative mortality in patients with chronic heart failure undergoing major non-cardiac surgery. This score incorporates four clinical parameters: estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), hemoglobin levels, and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) concentrations. The score is calculated using the formula:
Score = (eGFR LVEF Hemoglobin) / BNP
Based on the calculated score, patients are stratified into three risk categories:
High Risk: Score < 22.51
Intermediate Risk: Score between 22.52 and 68.10
Low Risk: Score > 68.10
This tool assists clinicians in identifying patients at higher risk for postoperative complications, enabling more informed decision-making and tailored perioperative management.
