  • Inflammatory Activity Score (Pericarditis Biomarkers): Explanation and Clinical Context
The Inflammatory Activity Score is a simplified clinical tool designed to quantify the degree of systemic inflammation in patients with acute pericarditis using standard laboratory biomarkers, including C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and white blood cell count (WBC).
This score assigns one point for each biomarker that exceeds established thresholds (CRP >10 mg/L, ESR >20 mm/hr, WBC >10 x10^9/L), producing a total score ranging from 0 to 3.
Higher scores indicate greater inflammatory activity, which may correlate with disease severity, risk of recurrence, or need for anti-inflammatory therapy adjustment.
This tool helps clinicians stratify patients quickly, monitor treatment response, and guide clinical decision-making regarding anti-inflammatory management and follow-up intensity.
