AEPEI Surgical Risk Index Calculator
- AEPEI Surgical Risk Index: Explanation and Clinical Context
The AEPEI Surgical Risk Index is a validated tool designed to estimate perioperative mortality risk in patients undergoing major non-cardiac surgery. It incorporates key patient-specific factors including age, ASA classification, urgency of surgery, heart failure, renal insufficiency, and the complexity of the surgical procedure.
The score is calculated by assigning points to each risk factor. Older age, higher ASA class, emergency surgery, and presence of comorbidities such as heart failure and renal insufficiency increase the overall risk score.
The total score stratifies patients into low, moderate, or high perioperative mortality risk, aiding clinicians in preoperative counseling, risk stratification, and optimization of perioperative management.
