  • Epicardial Fat Thickness Index (EFTI): Explanation and Clinical Context
Epicardial fat is the visceral fat depot surrounding the myocardium and coronary arteries. Measuring its thickness using echocardiography provides an estimate of cardiac visceral adiposity. The Epicardial Fat Thickness Index (EFTI) normalizes epicardial fat thickness to body surface area (BSA), allowing more accurate inter-patient comparisons.
Increased EFTI has been associated with higher risk of coronary artery disease, metabolic syndrome, and adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Clinically, an EFTI above 7 mm/m² may indicate elevated cardiovascular risk and warrants more aggressive risk factor management.
This tool allows clinicians to quantify epicardial fat relative to body size, improving risk stratification and patient counseling.
