Metabolic Syndrome Diagnostic Criteria Calculator
- Metabolic Syndrome Diagnostic Criteria Explanation and Clinical Context
Metabolic syndrome represents a clustering of interrelated metabolic abnormalities that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and type two diabetes. The diagnostic criteria used in this tool follow the Adult Treatment Panel Three guidelines which define metabolic syndrome as the presence of at least three of five components. These include abdominal obesity measured by waist circumference elevated triglycerides low HDL cholesterol elevated blood pressure and elevated fasting plasma glucose. Each component reflects an underlying pathophysiologic process such as insulin resistance endothelial dysfunction or chronic low grade inflammation which together amplify long term cardiometabolic risk. Identification of metabolic syndrome supports early lifestyle intervention and targeted medical therapy to reduce progression into overt cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
