About Life’s Essential 8
Life’s Essential 8 is the American Heart Association’s framework for measuring cardiovascular health. It comprises four health behaviors (diet, physical activity, nicotine exposure, and sleep health) and four health factors (body mass index, blood lipids, blood glucose, and blood pressure).
Each metric is scored from 0 to 100. The overall cardiovascular health score is the unweighted arithmetic mean of all eight component scores.
Overall CVH categories
- High CVH: 80–100
- Moderate CVH: 50–79
- Low CVH: 0–49
Important scoring notes
- Adult scoring is intended for individuals aged 20 years or older.
- Vigorous activity is counted as twice the number of moderate-equivalent minutes.
- For adults, the AHA uses non-HDL cholesterol; subtract 20 points when the measured lipid level is treated with lipid-lowering medication.
- Subtract 20 points for treated blood pressure and for living with an active indoor smoker at home (for nicotine score), as specified by the AHA.
- The AHA notes that clinicians may consider a 20-point sleep-score deduction for untreated or undertreated sleep apnea.
- Underweight BMI and BMI interpretation in people of Asian or Pacific ancestry require clinical context; the AHA notes that BMI thresholds may differ by ancestry.
