About Body Mass Index

Body mass index (BMI) is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. It is a convenient screening measure for adults, but it does not directly measure body fat or distinguish fat mass from muscle and bone mass.

This calculator displays BMI categories commonly used for Asian adults in Indonesian clinical practice. Risk can occur at lower BMI values in Asian populations, so BMI should be interpreted alongside central adiposity and other cardiometabolic risk factors.

Adult BMI classification

CategoryBMI (kg/m²)
Underweight<18.5
Normal18.5–22.9
Overweight23.0–24.9
Obesity class I25.0–29.9
Obesity class II≥30.0

Clinical considerations

  • Use age- and sex-specific growth references rather than adult BMI categories for children and adolescents.
  • BMI interpretation may be limited during pregnancy, in people with marked muscularity, and in conditions affecting fluid balance or body composition.
  • Consider waist circumference and other clinical findings when assessing cardiometabolic risk.
