ASCVD-Hypertension Submodel: Explanation and Clinical Context The ASCVD-Hypertension Submodel is a validated tool developed by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association to estimate the 10-year risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in patients with hypertension.
It incorporates demographic factors (age, sex, race), lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol), systolic blood pressure, hypertension treatment status, diabetes, and smoking status.
This model is particularly useful in hypertensive patients because it accounts for whether the patient is on antihypertensive therapy, providing a more precise risk estimation compared to general ASCVD calculators.
The output risk stratifies patients into low, borderline, intermediate, or high risk, guiding clinical decision-making for preventive therapy, including lifestyle modification and pharmacologic intervention.
