About the Atherogenic Index of Plasma

AIP is a logarithmic index derived from the molar ratio of plasma triglycerides to HDL cholesterol. Research has associated it with lipoprotein particle size and a more atherogenic lipid profile, but it is an adjunctive marker rather than a stand-alone diagnostic test.

Formula

AIPlog10 [TG (mmol/L) ÷ HDL-C (mmol/L)]
TG conversionTG (mg/dL) ÷ 88.57 = mmol/L
HDL-C conversionHDL-C (mg/dL) ÷ 38.67 = mmol/L

Proposed interpretive bands

AIP valueBand used by this tool
< 0.11Lower
0.11–0.21Intermediate
> 0.21Higher

These categories are commonly repeated in some studies, but published cut points vary across populations and contexts. AIP should be interpreted alongside established risk assessment, the full lipid profile, comorbidities, and applicable clinical guidelines.
