BIND Score for Neonatal Jaundice Calculator

  • Mental state score
  • Muscle tone score
  • Cry pattern score
  • Bilirubin induced neurologic dysfunction BIND Score Explanation and clinical context
The BIND score is a simple bedside scoring tool that quantifies the clinical severity of acute bilirubin neurologic dysfunction in neonates by assigning scores from zero to three to three clinical domains mental state muscle tone and cry pattern for a total possible score of zero to nine.

Total scores of one to three are generally considered mild and often reversible with prompt treatment while total scores of four to six reflect moderate severity where urgent bilirubin reduction interventions are likely to reverse acute damage and totals of seven to nine indicate advanced disease with high risk of long term neurotoxicity and need for immediate emergency intervention.

This tool is intended to support clinical assessment and triage especially in settings where advanced electrophysiology or imaging may not be readily available but it does not replace comprehensive clinical judgment or bilirubin measurements and treatment decisions should incorporate age in hours bilirubin levels and overall clinical context.
