Dengue Severity Criteria Calculator
- Dengue Severity Criteria Explanation and Clinical Context
Dengue severity classification is an essential tool to support early identification of patients who are at risk of deterioration. The framework is based on internationally accepted clinical criteria that distinguish three major groups which are probable dengue, dengue with warning signs, and severe dengue. Probable dengue is characterized by fever and supportive clinical features along with laboratory confirmation. Dengue with warning signs indicates progression of plasma leakage or early organ involvement which requires closer observation and timely intervention. Severe dengue reflects advanced plasma leakage, severe bleeding, or critical organ impairment and it is associated with a significant increase in morbidity and mortality.
The classification guides triage, monitoring intensity, and therapeutic decisions. Warning signs such as abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, mucosal bleeding, clinical fluid accumulation, lethargy, and rising hematocrit signal the need for escalation of care. Platelet trends complement the clinical picture although platelet count alone does not define severity. Accurate categorization supports prevention of shock and organ failure by enabling timely fluid resuscitation and closer surveillance.
