  • Central nervous system dysfunction (0=no, 1=yes)
  • Acute associated non-pulmonary infection (0=no, 1=yes)
  • PaCO2 before ECMO (mmHg)

  • RESP Score (Respiratory ECMO Survival Prediction) for VV-ECMO: Explanation and Clinical Context
The RESP Score is a validated tool developed to predict in-hospital survival in patients receiving veno-venous ECMO for severe respiratory failure.
It incorporates patient age, immunocompromised status, duration of mechanical ventilation before ECMO, central nervous system dysfunction, presence of acute non-pulmonary infections, pre-ECMO PaCO2, and specific respiratory diagnoses such as pneumonia or ARDS.
The total score stratifies patients into very high, high, moderate, low, and very low predicted survival categories, aiding clinicians in risk assessment, patient counseling, and resource allocation.
