  • RIETE Score (for VTE Recurrence): Explanation and Clinical Context
The RIETE Score is a clinical tool designed to estimate the risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE) after an initial episode of deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
It incorporates patient factors such as age, sex, prior history of VTE, presence of active cancer, whether the initial VTE was unprovoked, and recent surgery or immobilization.
Higher scores indicate increased risk of VTE recurrence and can guide clinicians in deciding the intensity and duration of anticoagulation therapy.
This score is particularly useful in stratifying patients into low, moderate, and high recurrence risk categories to individualize anticoagulation management and follow-up strategies.
