  • TBSA Burn Percentage Calculator Explanation and Clinical Context
Total Body Surface Area or TBSA estimation is a foundational step in the initial management of burn patients. Accurate assessment helps determine fluid resuscitation needs, predicts systemic impact, and guides decisions regarding transfer to burn centers. The commonly used approach is the Rule of Nines which allocates percentages of surface area to major body regions. Although simplified this method remains reliable for rapid clinical assessment especially in emergency settings. Higher TBSA values correlate with increased risks of hypovolemia systemic inflammatory response organ dysfunction and mortality. For adults the Rule of Nines assigns nine percent units to most regions except the perineum which is assigned one percent. The calculated TBSA value informs early fluid replacement typically guided by the Parkland formula and supports prognostication including the need for intensive monitoring. This tool offers a structured method for clinicians to quantify burn extent and integrate it into early therapeutic strategies.
