Calculate TyG Index

Enter fasting plasma glucose and triglycerides in mg/dL. Calculate the index using the published formula.

lnNatural log

Enter a fasting plasma glucose value greater than zero.

Enter a fasting triglyceride value greater than zero.

About the TyG Index

The triglyceride–glucose (TyG) index is a surrogate marker studied as an estimate of insulin resistance. It is calculated from fasting triglyceride and fasting plasma glucose concentrations.

Formula

TyG = ln [ triglycerides (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL) / 2 ]

ln denotes the natural logarithm. Both laboratory values must be positive and expressed in mg/dL for this implementation of the formula.

Clinical context

  • Higher values have been associated with insulin resistance and cardiometabolic risk in a range of research populations.
  • TyG is a surrogate measure, not a direct measurement of insulin sensitivity and not a stand-alone diagnostic test for diabetes or metabolic syndrome.
  • Published cutoffs vary by population, endpoint, assay context, and study design. This calculator therefore does not assign a universal “normal” range or diagnose disease.
