  • Wasserman Algorithm Index: Explanation and Clinical Context
The Wasserman Algorithm Index is a clinical tool used to evaluate cardiopulmonary exercise capacity relative to predicted values based on age and sex.
It incorporates measured VO2 peak during exercise testing, resting heart rate, and demographic variables to provide a percentage of predicted maximal oxygen uptake.
A value >80% of predicted is generally considered normal, whereas lower percentages indicate impaired cardiopulmonary fitness, which may reflect underlying cardiovascular or pulmonary disease.
This index aids clinicians in exercise prescription, functional assessment, and risk stratification in patients with cardiac or pulmonary conditions.
