  • Gait Nutritional Risk Index (NRI): Explanation and Clinical Context
The Nutritional Risk Index (NRI) is a validated scoring system developed by Buzby et al. (1988) to assess the risk of malnutrition in hospitalized patients.
It is calculated using the formula: NRI = (1.519 × serum albumin [g/dL]) + (41.7 × (current weight / usual weight)).
Higher NRI values indicate better nutritional status, while lower values indicate increased nutritional risk.
The NRI can be classified as follows: > 100 (no risk), 97.5–99.9 (mild risk), 83.5–97.4 (moderate risk), and <83.5 (severe risk).
This tool helps clinicians identify patients at risk for malnutrition, guide nutritional interventions, and monitor outcomes.
