Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) Assessment Calculator
- Glasgow Coma Scale Assessment Explanation and Clinical Context
Glasgow Coma Scale is a standardized scale for assessing level of consciousness in acute brain injury and other conditions affecting consciousness.
It comprises three components eye response verbal response and motor response with item scores summed to yield a total score from 3 to 15.
Eye response ranges from 1 to 4 with higher value indicating better spontaneous or stimulus driven opening of the eyes.
Verbal response ranges from 1 to 5 with higher value indicating more coherent and oriented speech.
Motor response ranges from 1 to 6 with higher value indicating more purposeful motor activity such as obeying commands.
Total score interpretation guides clinical decisions and communication for triage monitoring and prognosis.
A total score of 8 or less typically indicates severe impairment and may prompt airway protection and critical care level interventions.
A total score from 9 to 12 indicates moderate impairment and warrants close monitoring and targeted diagnostic evaluation.
A total score from 13 to 15 indicates mild impairment or near normal level of consciousness and supports less intensive monitoring depending on clinical context.
Always integrate GCS with other clinical data and repeated assessments to detect trends and treatment response.
