  • Fasting Glucose (mg per dL)
  • Fasting Insulin (micro IU per mL)
  • HOMA IR Insulin Resistance Calculator Explanation and Clinical Context
The Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance is a widely used method to estimate insulin resistance from fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels. The formula is fasting glucose in mg per dL multiplied by fasting insulin in micro IU per mL divided by four hundred five. This indirect method reflects the balance between hepatic glucose output and pancreatic beta cell function. Normal HOMA IR values generally fall below two although optimal thresholds vary among populations and clinical contexts. Elevated HOMA IR suggests impaired insulin sensitivity which is commonly observed in metabolic syndrome obesity type two diabetes and cardiovascular risk conditions. Clinicians use HOMA IR to support metabolic risk stratification identify early insulin resistance patterns and guide lifestyle and therapeutic interventions.
