  • Michigan Alcohol Screening Test MAST Explanation and Clinical Context
The Michigan Alcohol Screening Test is one of the earliest and most widely used tools for identifying individuals at risk of alcohol related problems. It evaluates behavioral patterns social consequences and personal perceptions related to drinking. The questionnaire includes items that reflect loss of control social impairment and potential medical or psychological complications. Each patient response contributes to a cumulative score that estimates the likelihood of alcohol misuse. Scores from zero to three indicate low probability of alcohol use disorder. Scores from four to eight suggest possible alcohol use disorder requiring further evaluation. Scores above eight represent a high probability of significant alcohol related problems that may need structured assessment and intervention. The tool provides valuable guidance for clinicians in primary care mental health and emergency settings where early detection of alcohol misuse can improve long term outcomes through timely counseling and treatment.
