  • Asthma Predictive Index Explanation and Clinical Context
The Asthma Predictive Index is a clinical tool developed to identify young children who have recurrent wheezing and who are at higher risk of developing persistent asthma later in childhood. The index is based on the presence of at least three wheezing episodes in one year combined with either one major criterion or two minor criteria. Major criteria include parental asthma and atopic dermatitis. Minor criteria include allergic sensitization to aeroallergens recurrent wheezing without colds blood eosinophils more than or equal to four percent and allergic sensitization to foods. A positive index has been associated with a significantly higher probability of persistent asthma into school age while a negative index suggests a low likelihood of future asthma. The tool provides clinicians with a systematic and empirical way to assess risk early and guide follow up decisions education strategies and early preventive approaches.
