- Eisenmenger Functional Class: Explanation and Clinical Context
The Eisenmenger Functional Class is a clinically derived risk stratification system used for patients with Eisenmenger syndrome to estimate functional limitation and prognosis.
It incorporates symptoms (NYHA class), oxygen saturation at rest, and 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) to predict exercise capacity and clinical outcomes.
Class I corresponds to patients with minimal symptoms and preserved functional capacity, Class II to mild-moderate limitation, Class III to marked limitation, and Class IV to severe limitation with symptoms at rest.
This classification helps guide therapeutic decisions, risk counseling, and timing for interventions such as pulmonary vasodilator therapy.
