- STAT Mortality Categories: Explanation and Clinical Context
The STAT Mortality Categories are a validated risk stratification tool designed to estimate perioperative mortality for pediatric and congenital cardiac surgery.
Patients are categorized from STAT 1 (lowest risk) to STAT 5 (highest risk) based on the complexity of the surgical procedure.
STAT 1 procedures have the lowest predicted mortality (~0.7–2%), whereas STAT 5 procedures carry the highest predicted mortality (~25–30%).
This categorization allows clinicians and surgical teams to communicate risk, guide perioperative management, and facilitate benchmarking across institutions.
