- HELLP Cardiovascular Severity Index (CSI): Explanation and Clinical Context
The HELLP Cardiovascular Severity Index (CSI) is a clinical tool used to assess the severity of cardiovascular involvement in patients with HELLP syndrome. It incorporates key laboratory markers—platelet count, AST (aspartate aminotransferase), LDH (lactate dehydrogenase)—and blood pressure levels to generate a total score.
The CSI allows clinicians to stratify patients into mild, moderate, or severe cardiovascular risk categories, which informs monitoring intensity, management decisions, and prognosis evaluation.
A low score generally indicates mild severity with favorable outcomes, whereas higher scores correlate with increased risk of complications, including preeclampsia-related cardiac stress, organ dysfunction, or need for intensive care.
