  • Pediatric Transfusion Volume Calculator: Explanation and Clinical Context
This calculator assists clinicians to estimate packed red cell transfusion volume for pediatric patients. The commonly used dose for red cell transfusion in children is four milliliters per kilogram per one gram per deciliter expected increase in hemoglobin concentration. This formula provides an approximate volume to achieve the desired hemoglobin rise in stable patients. Individual patient factors must always be considered including clinical status ongoing bleeding oxygen demand cardiovascular condition and transfusion history. Excessive transfusion may increase risk of volume overload alloimmunization and iron accumulation therefore careful assessment and monitoring remain essential. This tool is designed as a guide that supports clinical decisions not as a substitute for direct clinical judgement.
