- SCAI Shock Stages: Explanation and Clinical Context
The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) shock stages provide a standardized framework for classifying the severity of cardiogenic shock from Stage A (At risk) to Stage E (Extremis).
Stage A includes patients at risk but without hypoperfusion. Stage B shows early signs of shock without organ dysfunction. Stage C represents classic cardiogenic shock with hypotension and hypoperfusion. Stage D indicates deteriorating shock despite interventions, and Stage E represents refractory shock with imminent risk of death.
This classification helps clinicians triage patients, guide escalation of therapy, and stratify risk for clinical outcomes.
