- HFA-ICOS Cardio-Oncology Risk Score (ESC 2022): Explanation and Clinical Context
The HFA-ICOS Cardio-Oncology Risk Score is designed to stratify patients based on their baseline cardiovascular risk when initiating potentially cardiotoxic cancer therapy.
The score incorporates patient-specific factors including age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, prior heart failure or cardiomyopathy, previous cardiovascular disease, and planned cardiotoxic therapies such as anthracyclines and trastuzumab.
Each factor is assigned a weighted point according to its impact on cardiotoxicity risk, summing to a total score that classifies patients into low, intermediate, or high risk for cardiac complications during or after cancer therapy.
This tool assists clinicians in planning monitoring strategies, preventive interventions, and tailoring therapy to minimize cardiovascular events.
