- VO₂/HR Ratio (Cardiac Efficiency): Explanation and Clinical Context
The VO₂/HR ratio, also known as oxygen pulse, is calculated by dividing oxygen consumption (VO₂) by heart rate (HR) during exercise.
It reflects the amount of oxygen ejected by the heart per beat, providing a non-invasive measure of cardiac stroke volume and efficiency.
A higher VO₂/HR indicates more efficient cardiac function, whereas a low ratio may indicate impaired stroke volume or cardiac dysfunction.
This parameter is widely used in cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) to assess cardiovascular performance and stratify risk in patients with heart failure or other cardiac conditions.
