- SCD-HeFT Risk Model: Explanation and Clinical Context
The SCD-HeFT (Sudden Cardiac Death in Heart Failure Trial) Risk Model estimates 5-year mortality risk in patients with chronic heart failure and reduced ejection fraction. The model is derived from a multivariable Cox proportional hazards analysis of the SCD-HeFT trial population, incorporating age, sex, NYHA class, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), ischemic etiology, and QRS duration.
The predicted risk can guide discussions regarding the potential benefit of ICD therapy for primary prevention of sudden cardiac death, as higher risk patients may derive greater absolute benefit.
This risk model provides a quantitative estimate of mortality, facilitating risk stratification and individualized treatment planning in heart failure management.
