- HERDOO2 Score: Explanation and Clinical Context
The HERDOO2 score is a clinical decision tool designed to identify women with unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE) who may safely discontinue anticoagulation after 5–12 months of therapy.
It includes four variables: Hyperpigmentation, Edema, or Redness in either leg; D-dimer >250 μg/L; Obesity (BMI >30 kg/m²); and Older age >65 years. Each variable scores 1 point if present.
Patients with a score of 0–1 are considered low risk for recurrent VTE and may safely stop anticoagulation. Those with a score >2 are at higher risk and should generally continue anticoagulation.
This tool allows clinicians to balance the benefits of ongoing anticoagulation against bleeding risk and patient preferences.
