  • Gender (0 = Female, 1 = Male)
  • Location of DVT (0 = Distal, 1 = Proximal)
  • D-dimer after 1 month anticoagulation (µg/mL)
  • Vienna Prediction Model for Recurrent Venous Thromboembolism: Explanation and Clinical Context
The Vienna Prediction Model is a validated clinical tool designed to predict the 1-year risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism (VTE), particularly deep vein thrombosis (DVT), in patients who have completed initial anticoagulation.
The model incorporates three key variables: gender (male vs female), DVT location (proximal vs distal), and D-dimer levels measured one month after cessation of anticoagulation.
By combining these variables into a linear predictor, clinicians can estimate individualized recurrence risk to guide decisions on duration of anticoagulation therapy.
Higher scores correlate with increased recurrence risk, supporting prolonged anticoagulation in high-risk patients while avoiding overtreatment in low-risk individuals.
