  • Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (PESI): Explanation and Clinical Context
    PESI is a validated risk stratification tool designed to estimate 30-day mortality in patients with acute pulmonary embolism.
    It incorporates 11 variables, including age, sex, comorbidities (cancer, heart failure, chronic lung disease), vital signs (heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, temperature), altered mental status, and oxygen saturation.
    The total score stratifies patients into five classes (I–V), ranging from very low to high risk of short-term mortality.
    This tool aids clinicians in identifying patients suitable for outpatient management versus those requiring hospitalization or intensive monitoring.
