  • Villalta Score for Post Thrombotic Syndrome: Comprehensive Explanation and Clinical Context
The Villalta score is a validated clinical tool used to diagnose and grade the severity of Post Thrombotic Syndrome in patients with a history of deep vein thrombosis.

It consists of five patient reported symptoms including pain, cramps, heaviness, paresthesia, and pruritus, and six clinician assessed signs including pretibial edema, skin induration, hyperpigmentation, redness, venous ectasia, and pain on calf compression. Each variable is scored from 0 to 3 according to severity.
The total score ranges from 0 to 33. Post Thrombotic Syndrome is defined as a total score of 5 or more or the presence of a venous ulcer. Severity is classified as mild for scores 5 to 9, moderate for scores 10 to 14, and severe for scores 15 or more or if a venous ulcer is present.

This score is widely used in clinical practice and research to standardize diagnosis, monitor progression, and evaluate therapeutic interventions in chronic venous disease following deep vein thrombosis.
