- Pediatric BMI Percentile Tool Explanation and Clinical Context
Pediatric BMI percentile is a screening parameter that evaluates body mass index relative to children of the same sex and age. It helps clinicians classify nutritional status and detect underweight overweight and obesity early. Body mass index alone is not enough in pediatrics because normal BMI values change with growth therefore percentile interpretation is essential to guide diagnosis and preventive care.
Underweight is usually below the fifth percentile. Normal weight is commonly between the fifth and eighty five percent percentile. Overweight is between the eighty five and ninety five percent percentile and obesity is above the ninety five percent percentile. Pediatric BMI percentile is often used in routine pediatric check up obesity screening metabolic risk assessment and for monitoring lifestyle intervention programs.
