- MOCA Cognitive Assessment Explanation and Clinical Context
MOCA is a structured cognitive screening tool designed to detect mild cognitive impairment in a broad range of clinical settings. It evaluates multiple cognitive domains including executive function visuospatial skills language memory attention abstraction and orientation. The assessment is widely used because it captures subtle deficits that may not be visible on basic mental status examinations.
A total score of thirty represents intact cognitive function while a score below twenty six suggests the presence of cognitive impairment. Education level may affect performance which is why one point is commonly added for individuals with fewer than twelve years of formal education. Interpretation of results should always be integrated with clinical judgment patient history and functional assessment.
