  • Corrected Age for Preterm Infants Explanation and Clinical Context
Corrected age also known as adjusted age is used to evaluate growth and developmental progression in infants born before term. It reflects the age the infant would be if the pregnancy had reached forty weeks and helps provide a more accurate assessment of neurologic development physical growth and milestone achievement. Corrected age is calculated by subtracting the number of weeks of prematurity from the chronological age. This adjustment is clinically important because many preterm infants require additional time to reach expected developmental levels. Health care professionals often use corrected age until the infant reaches two years of age since most preterm infants catch up to full term peers by that time. The corrected age approach supports more accurate nutritional evaluation developmental surveillance early intervention referral and counseling for families.
