  • KOOS Knee Outcome Score Explanation and Clinical Context
The Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score is a validated multidimensional instrument that evaluates patient perceived knee health across five subscales. These domains include pain symptoms daily living function sport and recreation function and knee related quality of life. Each subscale is transformed to a zero to one hundred scale in which one hundred reflects the best possible knee condition and zero reflects the most severe limitation.

The KOOS instrument is widely used to monitor outcomes in ligament injuries meniscal injuries and osteoarthritis. It captures changes that may not be visible through imaging alone so it provides a patient centered perspective that supports clinical decision making. Low scores are associated with higher functional impairment and reduced quality of life while higher scores indicate better perceived knee function. Longitudinal changes in KOOS scores help clinicians assess recovery track rehabilitation progress and guide shared treatment decisions. The tool is also used frequently in clinical trials to evaluate the effectiveness of surgical or conservative interventions.
