    The Pediatric Ulcerative Colitis Activity Index PUCAI is a validated noninvasive clinical score to assess disease activity in children with ulcerative colitis. The index includes six items abdominal pain rectal bleeding stool consistency stool frequency nocturnal stools and activity level. Each item is assigned points and the total score ranges from 0 to 85. Scores below 10 indicate remission scores between 10 and 34 indicate mild disease scores between 35 and 64 indicate moderate disease and scores 65 or above indicate severe disease. PUCAI is used to monitor response to therapy to assist clinical decision making and to identify patients who may require escalation of therapy or surgical consultation.
