  • Ranson Score for Acute Pancreatitis Explanation and Clinical Context
The Ranson score is a prognostic scoring system developed to estimate severity and mortality risk in acute pancreatitis. It uses five clinical and laboratory criteria at admission and six criteria assessed within 48 hours. One point is assigned for each criterion met. A total score of three or greater indicates a high probability of severe disease. The score is most commonly applied to non gallstone pancreatitis in its classic form. Clinicians use the score to support risk stratification and early identification of patients who may require intensive monitoring and aggressive resuscitation including fluid management and organ support when indicated.
