BISAP Pancreatitis Mortality Score Calculator
- BISAP Pancreatitis Mortality Score Explanation and Clinical Context
The BISAP Score is a validated early risk stratification tool for predicting mortality in acute pancreatitis. The score incorporates five clinical parameters that can be measured within the first twenty four hours of hospital evaluation. These parameters include blood urea nitrogen elevation impaired mental status systemic inflammatory response syndrome advanced age and pleural effusion. A score of zero or one is generally associated with very low mortality risk while increasing scores show a clear stepwise rise in risk. Because acute pancreatitis has a variable clinical course early identification of patients at higher risk is crucial for guiding fluid resuscitation decisions monitoring intensity and timely intervention. The BISAP Score has been shown to perform comparably with more complex scoring systems while retaining a simple bedside structure that allows rapid clinical application.
