- TAPVR Repair Risk Index: Explanation and Clinical Context
Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Return (TAPVR) is a rare congenital heart defect where pulmonary veins drain abnormally into the right atrium or systemic veins, leading to cyanosis and increased pulmonary blood flow. Surgical repair is essential, but postoperative complications, including reinterventions, remain a concern.
The TAPVR Repair Risk Index is a clinical prediction model developed to assess the likelihood of late reintervention following TAPVR repair. This model incorporates three key factors:
- Residual Pulmonary Vein Lesion: The severity of any remaining pulmonary vein obstruction post-repair.
- Age at Surgery: Younger age, particularly infants under 1 year, is associated with higher risk.
- Preoperative Obstruction: Presence of obstruction before surgery increases the risk of reintervention.
