Khorana Score (Cancer-Associated Thrombosis) Calculator

  • Site of Cancer (Very High Risk = 2 points; High Risk = 1 point; Others = 0)
  • Platelet Count > 350 ×10^9/L
  • Hemoglobin < 10 g/dL or Use of Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents
  • Leukocyte Count > 11 ×10^9/L
  • Body Mass Index > 35 kg/m²
  • Khorana Score: Explanation and Clinical Context
The Khorana Score is a validated risk assessment model for predicting cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) in ambulatory patients with cancer.
It assigns points based on five clinical variables: site of cancer, platelet count > 350 ×10^9/L, hemoglobin < 10 g/dL or use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, leukocyte count > 11 ×10^9/L, and BMI > 35 kg/m².
Scores classify patients into low (0 points), intermediate (1–2 points), or high (>3 points) risk for venous thromboembolism.
This tool guides clinicians in considering prophylactic anticoagulation and close monitoring in high-risk patients.
