  • Current Cancer (Yes = 1, No = 0)
  • Lower Limb Paralysis (Yes = 1, No = 0)
  • Immobilization >7 days (Yes = 1, No = 0)

  • Age >60 years (Yes = 1, No = 0)
  • IMPROVE VTE Risk Score: Explanation and Clinical Context
The IMPROVE VTE Score is a validated clinical tool designed to predict the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in hospitalized medical patients.
It is based on simple clinical variables including previous VTE, known thrombophilia, current cancer, lower limb paralysis, immobilization >7 days, ICU or CCU stay, and age >60 years.
Points are assigned according to each risk factor, and the total score stratifies patients into low, moderate, or high risk for VTE.
This tool helps clinicians identify patients who may benefit from pharmacologic or mechanical prophylaxis and informs risk-benefit decisions regarding anticoagulation.
