  • ARIC Diabetes CVD Score: Explanation and Clinical Context
The ARIC Diabetes CVD Score is a validated risk assessment tool to estimate the 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease in adults with type 2 diabetes. It was derived from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study cohort and incorporates patient-specific variables including age, sex, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, smoking status, antihypertensive medication use, and diabetes duration.
This score allows clinicians to stratify patients into risk categories, inform preventive strategies, and optimize treatment plans for cardiovascular risk reduction.
The score calculation is based on a Cox proportional hazards model, and the 10-year risk is estimated from the model's linear predictor and baseline survival probability.
