- BASMI Mobility Score Explanation and Clinical Context
BASMI or Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index is a standardized instrument used to quantify spinal and hip mobility limitation in patients with axial spondyloarthritis. The score is derived from five physical measurements which include cervical rotation tragus to wall distance lumbar side flexion lumbar flexion evaluated with the modified Schober test and intermalleolar distance. Each component is converted into a linear scale from zero to five and the final BASMI value is obtained by averaging all components. Higher scores indicate more severe impairment of mobility and stronger structural restriction. BASMI provides clinicians with an objective method to evaluate functional limitation monitor disease progression and assess therapeutic response in both clinical practice and research settings. It reflects not only inflammatory activity but also chronic structural changes that may persist even after symptoms improve. BASMI is therefore particularly useful when combined with disease activity scores such as BASDAI to offer a comprehensive picture of functional status and treatment needs.
