sPESI (Simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index) Calculator
- sPESI (Simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index): Explanation and Clinical Context
The sPESI is a validated scoring tool designed to stratify the 30-day mortality risk of patients diagnosed with acute pulmonary embolism (PE).
It simplifies the original PESI by including six clinical variables: age >80 years, history of cancer, history of chronic cardiopulmonary disease, heart rate >110 bpm, systolic blood pressure <100 mmHg, and oxygen saturation <90%.
Each positive variable is assigned 1 point. A total score of 0 indicates low risk, while a score >1 indicates high risk of 30-day mortality.
This tool assists clinicians in guiding management decisions, identifying patients suitable for outpatient treatment, and predicting prognosis accurately.
