  • Pain Disability Index Explanation and Clinical Context
The Pain Disability Index is a validated multidimensional instrument designed to measure how much chronic pain affects daily functioning. It evaluates seven domains of life which include family and home responsibilities, recreation, social activity, occupation, sexual behavior, self care activities, and life support activities. Each domain represents an essential aspect of daily living that can be impaired by persistent pain. Scores for each domain range from zero which indicates no disability to ten which indicates total inability to perform that activity. The total score is calculated by summing the values from all domains resulting in a range from zero to seventy. Higher totals reflect greater levels of disability related to pain. Clinically the Pain Disability Index helps quantify functional impairment provide a baseline to monitor therapeutic response and guide decision making in the management of chronic pain conditions. It is widely used in rehabilitation pain clinics and research settings because of its simplicity reliability and relevance to patient centered outcomes.
